To ease traffic and provide an alternate route to reach different ends of the city, the Surat Municipal Corporation has planned to develop a middle ring road at a cost of Rs21.40 crore. The 12.25 km long route will connect Varachha to the Surat-Navsari road.

The Public Works Committee of the SMC has given a preliminary nod to the project.

Work on two patches of the road is under progress. The middle ring road is being developed under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukyamantri Sahri Vikas Yojana, which will connect important areas of the city, on a single route. A two-lane 45-meter wide road connecting Sitanagar chowkdi (Varachha) to Surat-Navsari road, through Surat-Bardoli road and Bhedwad khadi will be built.

Because of the route, those who want to go to Pandesara and Sachin will not have to take a roundabout of the city and can reach there quickly. "At present, one has to take a roundabout of the city to reach either of the place. This is not only time consuming but also creates traffic problems," said Shashikant Dalia, chairman of public works committee. He said the alternate route, which is shorter, will be a welcome. "Looking at the pace of work, the ring road will be finished within the stipulated time," said Dalia.

Road Development Department of SMC planned the project some years ago. Work on 1.10 km route from Dindoli kharwasa road to the by-pass at railway line at a cost of Rs1.42 crore and 1.40 km route from Surat-Bardoli road to Godadara canal at a cost of Rs2.46 crore is under progress.
