Paul Lyngdoh, the lone legislator of the Khyun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) party, has been stripped of the important urban affairs ministry in a cabinet reshuffle by Meghalaya chief minister DD Lapang.

The crucial portfolio was taken away from Lyngdoh after some Congress legislators reportedly demanded his ouster, citing that he was given undue importance even as he was the only representative of his party.

The dissidents, led by state Congress chief Friday Lyngdoh, had even apprised the AICC leaders of a "break-down" in urban governance, party sources said. The KHNAM party MLA had also taken an 'equivocal' stand on the vexed uranium mining issue.

Paul Lyngdoh now holds charge of PWD (Buildings), general administration department (GAD), co-operation, home guard and
civil defence and home (jails) departments, besides the labour department which was taken away from deputy chief minister
Mukul Sangma.

PHE minister Prestone Tynsong was given the urban affairs portfolio in the reshuffle that was effected last night, official sources said. The revenue and district council affairs portfolio which were earlier held by Tynsong has gone to senior Congress leader RC Laloo.

Education minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has been given the additional charge of food and civil supplies, which was taken away from United Democratic Party MLA J A Lyngdoh.

JA Lyngdoh will now hold the charge of agriculture, fisheries, housing secretariat administration, printing and stationary, stamp and registration departments.

Independent legislator Ismail Marak was given Science and Technology, in addition to the transport department he is holding currently. Information and technology minister AT Mondal will also look after irrigation.
