Ahmedabad on Monday hosted an important review meeting headed by union secretary for urban development Dr N Ramchandran. In the meeting, various issues and work under progress for different urban development projects were discussed.

The meeting was attended by the city heads who implemented urban development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Talking to media persons, Dr Ramchandran said that the most important thing about the projects initiated under JNNURM is that they need to be completed within the stipulated time so that citizens can enjoy the benefits as early as possible.

Some of the important aspects that were discussed included how to control reforms in the state, whether local bodies the have capacity to complete the work under the mission and if the projects are being executed on time.

"There was also a discussion to form regulatory system for urban projects on the lines of water system in Maharashtra. However, this was just an idea that was floated in the meeting and it is not yet decided how to implement it. Many aspects need to be considered including if regulation be put in place only for private partners or if all services should be covered. There is also a matter of if the regulation should be state level or central level," said Dr Ramchandran.

He said Rs58,300 crore has been allocated for around 70 projects in Gujarat under the urban development project.

He said, Gujarat is doing well in terms of execution of projects under the JNNURM and has been completing the work within the time frame
