As the third phase of mock rounds for admissions to engineering colleges are underway, officials of the Central Admission Committee (CAC) say that an increasing number of students are looking for admission to the mechanical engineering stream.

And the reasons are not difficult to comprehend, if one looks at the placements of students who have completed their mechanical engineering in the last two years.

Of the 314 students who have been placed from the 2009 batch at the LD Engineering College, 70 have been placed in companies wanting mechanical engineers, and 34 each in Electrical and Electronics & Communications (EC).

This year too, even as the placement process is on, of the 213 students placed so far, 51 have been absorbed as mechanical engineers, followed by 23 and 21 each from EC and Electrical.

There is a clear trend - placements seem to be the best for mechanical engineers.

Importantly, the placements for the mechanical stream recorded an encouraging trend even during recession phase.

Placement officer at LD Engineering college, Prof KB Bhoyania, said, "It has been the trend since the last two years that the highest placement goes to students having taken up mechanical engineering."

He pointed out that till two years ago, the demand among students was primarily for Electronics & Communications and Electrical engineering.

He said that there was demand for these branches not only in India but abroad as well. But now, that trend has changed.

He said that recruitment by companies like L&T, during the previous year and to some extent this year as well, has been for students having completed their mechanical engineering.

As per statistics of the previous year, L&T had absorbed eight students from the mechanical branch and this year too, 11 students from this branch have been absorbed so far.
