Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati’s close aide is in the dock over a recruitment scam in the UP State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC). The recruitment exercise is an example of blatant nepotism as relatives of several BSP leaders, ministers and senior officers have been appointed.

A writ petition filed in the Allahabad high court states that all appointments were made without any written test, allegedly at the behest of UPSIDC chairman Babu Singh Kushwaha, known for his proximity to Mayawati. UPSIDC authorities, however, denied any such irregularities.

UPSIDC had, in an advertisement, invited applications for 10 posts of assistant manager in January this year. However, 24 appointments were made. Apart from assistant managers, appointments were also made to the posts of managers and deputy managers, which were not mentioned in the advertisement.

Interestingly, the UPSIDC website (www.upsidc.com) only lists the roll numbers of successful candidates, ostensibly to keep the names of the high and mighty from being revealed.

Those who have benefited from the UPSIDC largesse include Sudhir Kumar, son of UP minister Ved Ram Bhati, Umesh Chauhan, son of UP minister Phagu Chauhan, Geshu, daughter of IAS officer Rambodh Maurya, who is director, geology and mining, a department headed by mining minister Kushwaha.

Others who have qualified include, Reshmi Maurya, grand-daughter of UP backward commission chairman Paras Nath Maurya, Masoor Katiyar, son of former BSP MLA Ashok Katiyar, Arti Katiyar, wife of BSP leader Ajit Katiyar and Sharmila Patel, a relative of UPSIDC manager Ajit Singh, who was in-charge of recruitments.

The writ petition filed by the UPSIDC Karmachari Sanyukt Sangh lists these names with the plea that these appointments be quashed.

“Such a blatantly illegal exercise indicates the involvement of the top authorities,” Sangh general secretary Devendra Singh said. Singh alleges that the list of beneficiaries could not have been cleared without Kushwaha’s involvement.

Kushwaha, however, said he was not aware of any such scam. UPSIDC MD SK Verma also toes his line.

“There’s no complaint about any irregularities in these appointments… If there’s any such thing, we will conduct an inquiry,” he told DNA. “The appointments were made on the basis of documents and merit,” he said, confirming that there was no written test, and candidates were chosen after an interview.
