Kerala Police on Thursday told Italian diplomats that the two naval guards of a merchant ship arrested for the death of two Indian fishermen should comply with Indian law and made it clear that the fire arms allegedly used in the incident would be seized as directed by a court.
Kerala DGP Jacob Punnose conveyed this when a six-member diplomat group led by Consual-General of Italy in Mumbai Gian Paola Cuttillo met the top police officials at the Police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
According to police sources, the delegation members expressed their anxiety on the Italian naval guards Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone, against whom a murder case has been registered, being taken to jail as their police custody ends on Thursday.
The delegation talked about the facilities to be given to the guards in the jail but were asked by the top police officials to approach the court.
Police also brought to their notice about the court order on the search of ship Enrica Lexie for the recovery of fire arms allegedly used for killing the two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kollam on February 15.
They maintained that the fire arms had to be recovered if a case had been registered and there was no question of doing away with it, sources said.
The Italian team reiterated their country's stand that the case should be handled under international laws.
The meeting that lasted for 90 minutes was also attended by ADGP (South Zone) P Chandrasekharan and ADGP (Intelligence) TP Senakumar.
