Maoists have killed a senior Congress leader in Odisha’s  Nuapada district after branding him anti-people and accusing him of being a police informer, an officer said Sunday.

The rebels killed Sunil Dewangan, 35, the elected head of Nuapada block near Lodhra village located within the Sunabeda wild life sanctuary, about 580 kms from state capital Saturday night.

The incident came to light after police rushed to the spot.

“He was stabbed in his chest”, district superintendent of police Sanjay Kaushal told IANS.

Five Maoists posters were found at the spot in which the rebels accused Dewangan of working against the interests of the poor and providing information to the police on the Maoist activities in the region, he said.

He was the second politician in the state to have been murdered by Maoists during the past two months.

The rebels had earlier killed Jagabandhu Majhi a legislature of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and his personal security officer in Nabrangpur district September 24.

Maoists are active in more than half of the state’s 30 districts.
