New Delhi: Prime minister (PM) Manmohan Singh is likely to make a statement on Tuesday to break the Telangana deadlock.
The statement may come after a high-level meeting, possibly of the cabinet committee on political affairs, which is likely to discuss the developments after the Centre's recent announcement to grant statehood to Telangana. The meeting is also likely to discuss Monday's tripartite talks over the demand for a separate Gorkhaland.
A delegation of parliamentarians from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema met PM on Monday and demanded a review of the Centre's decision.
The delegation led by Eluru MP KS Rao and T Subbarami Reddy, a Rajya Sabha member of the Congress from Andhra, apprised PM of the law and order disruptions in the state following the Centre's controversial announcement and claimed that "all political outfits are in support of a united Andhra".
The MPs also claimed that if the Centre did not step in to contain the "ongoing political anarchy" right away, the situation might deteriorate further
"We met PM and explained to him that the situation in Andhra is going out of control. A stage may come when the government may not be able to help. We urged him to make an announcement to bring solace to people," Rao said.
Pressure has been mounting on the Congress-led UPA government, with allies DMK and NCP criticising the "haphazard decision".
Following the meeting with Manmohan, Reddy said, "He [PM] understands that the situation in Andhra is serious and will meet his colleagues tomorrow [Tuesday] to discuss the issue."
Asked whether the Centre took a "haphazard decision" on Telangana, as being propagated by DMK and NCP, he said, "The announcement was made after seeing the seriousness of the situation then. Now, however, it's time for a consensus exercise for an amicable solution."
