West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said she would start a television channel and a newspaper to cater to the needs of the state government.

“I have already told my ministers that I want to start a channel and a newspaper for the West Bengal government. The channels will cater to the government, both through television and radio. In any case, the work that we do gets undervalued,” said Banerjee.

The proposal comes up as an effort to negate the negative picture drawn of Mamata Banerjee and her government, and to highlight the development work done by the state government.

Banerjee recently made the headlines, several times, for all the wrong reasons, when she jailed Partho Sarothi Ray, a molecular biologist and Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra.

Ray was sent to jail for his alleged role in protests against slum evictions in Kolkata, while professor Mahapatra was also arrested for forwarding a controversial cartoon featuring the chief minister.

Banerjee had also drawn criticism over her decision to redesign school syllabi with reduced emphasis on Marx and Engels and exclude prominent English dailies from state-owned public libraries.
