Mamata Banerjee may visit Maoist-infested region soon

After announcing a special package for Junglemahal, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee along with some cabinet colleagues is likely to visit the Maoist-affected area soon, secretariat sources said today.

The sources, however, said that confirmation about the chief minister's visit is yet to be received as also the names of other ministers.

Banerjee despatched urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim to Junglemahal today to look into problems of drinking water and to assess how infrastructure development plans could be executed.

The chief minister also convened a meeting with ministers, senior officials and technocrats to chalk out a plan of action for development of Junglemahal which comprises forested areas in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts.

At another meeting with home secretary GD Gautama and senior police officials, steps to restore peace and normalcy were discussed.

The meetings discussed how roads and communication could be improved in Junglemahal, besides an effective the public distribution system.
