Malaysia is likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India's National Innovation Foundation (NIF) to understand the process related to innovations, methodology and collection of ideas.

The proposed MoU is likely to comprise an entire package that will cover scouting for innovation, its incubation and business development.

A delegation led by Malaysian minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Maximus J Ongkili visited NIF and Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) in Ahmedabad.

They also had a look at certain unique innovative ideas displayed at Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI).

"I am impressed with the kind of work done by NIF. In learning their procedures for collecting grassroots ideas, I have learnt a lot," Dr Ongkili said. Innovation funding centre in Malaysia is just two years old and hence the minister visited various NIF centres in India to widen the scope for sharing, learning and understanding between both nations.

Chairperson for NIF, Prof Anil Gupta said that the entire meet is aimed at facilitating people to people learning, wherein both can market each other's innovations. "If the MoU works out then new models of inclusive innovations will come to the fore and with collaboration, people of both the nations will get new opportunities."

Dr Ongkili further said that many times innovations by people at grassroots level remain untapped. "We want to implement NIF's ways of collecting ideas from rural areas in our country. There is a deep pool of ideas and innovations in both the nations at the grassroots level that is waiting to be tapped."
