Malayalam poet who missed Nobel expresses delight over Transtromer's win

Though Satchidanandan, the Malayalam poet whose name figured in the list of probables for the Nobel Literary Prize could not bag the honour, he was happy to learn that his friend Tomas Transtromer turned out to be the winner. “Tom is my good friend and I only introduced him to poetry lovers in India,” Satchidanandan told DNA on Thursday.

“Tom is a poet by nature and childhood. All his poems are built on memories and images which are sharp and haunting ,” said Satchidanandan.  
 
Transtromer is rated as the father of modern Swedish poetry. “He is an iconic figure in Europe. What excites me are his colourful and meaningful images,” said Satchidanandan.

The Malayalam poet had told on Wednesday that it was a rare honour to be considered as an equal and contemporary of literary giants like Transtromer. Satchidanandan has translated some of the poems penned by Transtromer into.
