Many cases of malaria, dengue and viral fever are being reported in the city. During July, the AMC run hospitals had registered 205 cases of malaria, 14 cases of dengue and 148 cases of other fever including viral infection, said Dr Suhas Kulkarni, medical officer of health of AMC.

These figure include only indoor patients and not the patients who were given treatment in OPD at the three AMC hospitals - VS Hospital, LG Hospital and Shardaben Hospital.

Many cases of malaria, dengue and viral fever were treated by private doctors but their record is not available with the civic body.

Malaria
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites from the plasmodium family that can be transmitted by the sting of the Anopheles mosquito or by a contaminated needle or transfusion. Falciparum malaria is the most deadly type.

The symptoms of malaria include cycles of chills, fever, sweats, muscle aches and headache that recur every few days. There can also be vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, and yellowing (jaundice) of the skin and eyes.

Persons with severe falciparum malaria can develop bleeding problems, shock, kidney and liver failure, central nervous system problems. They can also go into a coma and may even die. The fever generally lasts for half-an-hour to three hours followed by severe perspiration. The fever repeats after 24 to 48 hours.

The treatment of malaria is with oral or intravenous medications, including chloroquine, mefloquine (Larium), or atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone).  Dr Dipak Dantara, a general physician, said that as the perspiration level is very high in fever caused by malaria, a patient is required to take lots of liquid and water. It helps the patient to keep the body well hydrated.

Dengue
Dengue is also known as dengue fever, a viral illness spread by mosquitoes. It usually follows a benign course with headache, fever, prostration, severe joint and muscle pain, abdominal pain, swollen glands (lymphadenopathy) and rash.

Victims of dengue often have contortions due to the intense joint and muscle pain. This is the reason why dengue fever is also called “breakbone fever.” The patient should take at least 2 to 2.5 litres of liquid fluid everyday. He should include more fruits and liquid in routine diet, said Dr Dantara.

The treatment of dengue fever depends on symptoms and clinical diagnose. The patient suffering with dengue fever should not be given pain killers such as aspirin as it may lead to haemorrhage.

Viral Fever
Viral fever is generally caused because of infection in upper respiratory tract. Initial symptoms may include head, muscle, joint, and abdominal pain; nausea and vomiting; sweating and thirst; running nose and coldlike symptoms.

The treatment of viral fever depends on the clinical diagnose and symptoms as it is not possible to find it out through blood test.

Dr Dantara said that personal hygiene and sanitised surrounding play a vital role in preventing viral fever. One should wash hands with soap frequently and also keep oneself clean, he said.
