The Gujarat Mahila Federation on Tuesday submitted list of its demands to political parties to be included in their election manifesto. Primary among the demands is means and ways to ensure halt in rising incidences of violence against women.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Ila Pathak of Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group (Awag) – an organisation that works for battered women – said that they have presented a charter of demands, but their primary concern is violence against women.

“More than seventeen women in the state die an unnatural death everyday. It’s time government got serious about this issue,” said Pathak, adding that, “We want them to start a counselling centre in districts that have recorded over 100 cases of violence against women.”

Pathak went on to say that their organisation has also sought for a change in format of registration of marriages. “It is strange that consenting adults entering matrimony need to get signatures of their parents in the marriage registration format,” said Pathak. Federation has also demanded registration of child marriages as well. The skewed sex ratio in Gujarat is another matter of concern.

When asked if they had presented such demands in earlier elections, Pathak replied in the affirmative but also mentioned that these demands never made it to the election manifesto of the political parties.

She further said that they had a meeting with political parties on September 8 in the matter. “Other than Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP), Congress and SUCI, nobody else bothered to turn up for the meeting,” said Pathak.
