Advocating for a strong Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as an autonomous body, former CBI director DR Kaarthikeyan said on Monday that the agency should become a part of Lokpal. To save the agency from political interference, the former CBI chief suggested reforming the agency on the lines of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

"The perception of the nation about the CBI is that it has been used by the politicians. The perception is right when it comes to the issues which are politically sensitive. I myself received calls during the investigation in connection with former prime minister  Rajiv Gandhi's assassination," Kaarthikeyan said on the sidelines of 'Gujarat NRE National Integrity Theme Presentation Contest' at Nirma University.

Kaarthikeyan, who was awarded Padmashree in 2010, was head of the special investigation team (SIT) which probed Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. He said that the CBI should be made answerable directly to Parliament or the Supreme Court for better results. He also opined that the CBI can also be a part of Lokpal.

He criticised the attempts to split the anti-corruption wing from agency. He said that the agency should be kept intact in its present form in this regard otherwise it will not be able to function effectively.

The contest was organised as part of 'I-FEST-2011' which was the 8th Annual Student Convention for Gujarat Region organised jointly by Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), and Institute of Technology, Nirma University (ITNU). Pranay Nagori and Jemish Golakia were declared winners while Rohit Gulabwani was declared runner-up.

Other guests present were chief commissioner of customs (Gujarat), Lipika Majumdar Roychoudhury, and Gujarat NRE Group chairman Arun Jagatramka.
