The third suspect in the gang rape of a 25-year-old woman on Thursday, Subhash Hiralal Bhosale, was remanded to police custody till April 8 by judicial magistrate RB Bhagwat on Saturday, in Pune.

The other two suspects had been remanded to police custody on Friday. Hinjewadi police arrested Bhosale on Friday midnight near Talegaon Dabhade in Pune district.

Police inspector NS Bhosale Patil produced him before the court on Saturday afternoon to secure police custody. The other suspects were identified as Ranjit Shahaji Gade (25) of Mann and Ganesh Uttam Kamble (26) of Thergaon, in the outskirts of Pune.
According to the prosecution, the victim’s husband had left for the US on March 29 and was working with a software firm. The woman — a graduate in hospitality management — had received an e-mail regarding a job offer which brought her to Pune.

On the day of the incident, she was planning to go to Alankar Building, on Bhandarkar road, for a seminar. She was waiting for a bus at Mankar Chowk, when a person in a red Indica, which was plying as an illegal taxi, offered her a lift to Pune. The victim boarded the car as she was in a hurry.

After recharging his mobile at a shop at Jagtap Dairy, the person drove across Pune University, Shivajinagar, Swargate and Bavdhan areas till 6pm and later stopped at a petrol pump at Nigdi.

According to the prosecution, when the woman got impatient and tried to call her mother on her cell phone, Subhash Bhosale attacked her, snatched her handset and warned her to remain silent.

Later, the third suspect was picked up by the duo and the trio proceeded to purchase biryani from Hotel Kasturi located near Hinjewadi police station. One of the suspects, Ranjit went to purchase beer at Hotel Lemon Tree but couldn’t get it at around 11.30pm. The suspects then drove to an isolated place near the Tech Mahindra Complex where they allegedly gang raped the woman, police said in their remand report submitted to the court. The Indica involved was registered in Bhosale’s sister’s name according to the police.

Public prosecutor Luxman Maindad argued in the court that police needed Bhosale’s custody to recover the weapon which was used to threaten the victim. The victim’s mobile handset, which was snatched by a suspect, also needed to be recovered, Maindad said.

Shiv Sena’s women activists threw bangles and shouted slogans against Bhosale in the Shivajinagar court premises when he was produced there by the police.
