Mahesh Desai to head world urology body

Dr Desai is the first Indian to have been honoured by this coveted position.

Dr Mahesh Desai, managing trustee and chairman, department of urology, Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, Nadiad, was elected president of the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU) at the 30th World Congress held in Shanghai, China during November 1-5, 2009.

Dr Desai is the first Indian to have been honoured by this coveted position. It is a recognition that has brought pride and prestige not only to him and the Nadiad Kidney Hospital, but to the country as well. SIU is an international professional organisation serving the global community of urologists. As of now, it has more than 4,000 members from more than 100 countries. Founded in Paris in 1907, the SIU central office now serves its members from its new premises in Montreal, Canada.

Desai received a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh in 1973. In UK, he obtained specialised training in urology. He joined hands with Dr VV Desai and established the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in Nadiad. Desai has adopted the most modern treatment for stone disease, and developed innovative techniques in Ureteroscopy, Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy and ESWL.
