The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) has signed an MoU with the Defence services to offer specialised distance education courses for army personnel.

"The MoU was signed between Dr R Krishnakumar, Vice Chancellor of YCMOU and Lt. General V K Chaturvedi, Director General of Manpower Planning and Personnel Services," said Shrinivas Belsare, Head, Corporate Communications, YCMOU.

The university will offer courses for Jawans and officers in all three services of the Defence forces with 44 new study centres that will be established all over the country in addition to the existing 3600 centres in Maharashtra.

"A special B.Ed programme will also be launched for war
widows so that they can seek employment. Also BA, BCom and MBA programmes will be developed catering to the needs of Defence services," Krishnakumar said. The university also plans a customised BSc programme for the children of Defence personnel to prepare them for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam if they plan on joining the Services.

"It is observed that after a lifetime of service for the nation, the jawans, who are highly respected by all citizens, lose self-esteem when they are forced to work as 'watchmen' or 'security guards' in a private organisation after retirement from the services," Krishnakumar explained. "This is because of inadequate qualifications. They never get the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills while working under harsh conditions. The conventional education system is not enough for these remotely placed jawans. YCMOU, with its aim to 'reach the unreached', has developed these programmes to facilitate education amongst jawans," Krishnakumar said.

"YCMOU will provide self-study and distance education books free of cost," he further added.
