Normally, Congress leaders from Maharashtra knock at Sonia Gandhi’s door separately to complain against each other. But on Thursday, they put up a rare show of unity and jointly proposed her name for yet another term as party president.

Union ministers from the state Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde, Mukul Wasnik, Murli Deora, Prithviraj Chavan, Gurudas Kamat and Prateek Bapu Patil, chief minister Ashok Chavan, other state ministers and MPs all went to Sonia’s 10 Janpath residence to seek her acceptance of the candidature for the Congress president’s post.

Sonia’s election is actually a formality, but the bonhomie among the leaders was rare, given the state of factional turbulence. They all assembled at the Congress headquarters, around 11 am and awaited their turn for quite some time as states were called to 10 Janpath in alphabetical order.
