Although many parts of the country have received bountiful rainfall this monsoon, the picture is quite dismal in large parts of Madhya Pradesh.

The state is on the verge of drought for the second consecutive year as 23 out of 50 districts are facing deficient rainfall this monsoon.

"Five districts are facing over 40% deficiency of rainfall, seven between 30 and 40% while another 11 districts witnessed less than 30% shortfall so far this monsoon which normally ends in the first fortnight of September in Madhya Pradesh," Meteorological Department officials said here today.

Katni district is the worst-hit region having received 43cm rains against average rainfall of 97cm, a shortfall of 56%.

The highest rainfall of 82cm was recorded in Dhar against the average of 69cm, they said.

Apart from Katni, other districts which experienced deficient rainfall include Tikamgarh, Sehore, Panna, Anuppur, Shajapur, Bhopal, Narsinghpur, Raisen, Satna and Rewa, they said.

However, all is not lost for the state with possibility of some more rains in the days to come.

Met officials said that monsoon was active in some parts of the state and another system was forming in the Bay of Bengal which could become active by September 14 and may cause rains at many places in the State.

There is likelihood of another spell of good rains at that time and it might help reduce the shortfall to some extent, officials said.

Overall Madhya Pradesh has so far received 76cm of rainfall which was 13cm less than the average of 89cm, Met officials said.

Madhya Pradesh's average rainfall for the season is around 100cm between June one to September 30, they added.
