The London School of Economics has joined hands with Tata International Social Entrepreneurship Scheme (ISES) this year to enable its students to be part of the two-month distinctive corporate sustainability internship programme.

The two year old Tata ISES, which has affiliations with the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and the University of Cambridge, UK, will have 13 scholars for the summer internship this year out of which three are from London School of Economics, while six are from the University of Cambridge and four are from the University of California.

The primary objective of Tata ISES is to provide students of leading foreign universities an opportunity to work on the community initiative projects of Tata companies in India, providing them grassroot exposure to India while bringing international perspectives and practices to these projects and promoting international understanding, executive director, Tata Sons, R Gopalakrishnan said.

This year's programme will witness 13 scholars from these renowned universities undertaking summer internships with six Tata companies including Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels, Tata Power, Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices - to gain firsthand knowledge of social and community development issues, he said.

The visiting interns, selected by their educational institutions along with the representatives of Tata, are standout scholars and they come from diverse academic backgrounds such as psychology, anthropology, public administration and management.

The first phase of the internship programme for students from Berkeley began on June 1 while the next phase, scheduled to start from July 5, would be for the visitors from Cambridge and the London School of Economics, Gopalakrishnan said.

The programme will cover subjects such as agriculture, health, environment, women, self-help groups, livelihoods and community engagement initiatives for brand building, he said.
