Rivals may mock at him for nursing prime ministerial ambitions, but even as he turns 84 during the course of his another political yatra, Bharatiya Janata Party’s eternal traveller LK Advani refuses to give up his claim as man entitled for another shot at the top job.

“There are still three years for the general elections. The party will decide the PM’s candidate during elections,” he said.

His message to his critics both within and outside the party is loud and clear. He is still fighting fit for the coveted post and is very much in the reckoning. Now, he will prove his endurance abilities by covering almost 7,600 kilometres in 38 days. Most of the journey would be covered by road and partly by air.

Meanwhile, as for his yatra, Advani said his intention is to mobilise public opinion on the issues of honest politics and good governance and channelise public anger. He wants to capitalise the public anger as seen during Anna Hazare’s campaign. Advani praised the civil society organisations saying they have rendered a great national service by campaigning on the issue of probity.

“This anger has arisen on account of the inadequacy of leadership provided by the Centre and the complete decline of ethical politics pursued by the UPA. This has resulted in a general environment of cynicism affecting the credibility of India’s parliamentary democracy and the politicians who man it… It is the political parties which are the essence and strength of parliamentary democracy,” he said.

Advani also hit out at government saying the UPA government has been reluctant in bringing back black money stacked in foreign banks because it wants to “save a few from embarrassment.”, but did not name these.

“I have reason to believe that recently disclosures have been made to the Government of India with regard to accounts held by Indians in one of the leading Swiss banks.  I understand that the Income tax Department has been asked to quietly deal with this issue and put a lid on the whole matter.”

On Modi, Advani tried to dispel speculations by saying the duo had a talk and Modi apparently assured Adavni that he will be there to welcome him when the yatra reaches Gujarat. But there were still enough indications that Modi was unhappy due to reinduction of Sanjay Joshi. “Party has to deal with many questions,” Advani said.
