Smaller consignments and disappearance of the big players in bootlegging has led to a 80% to 100% spike in the prices of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold illegally in the city.

The short supply of liquor follows the strict vigil kept
by cops on illegal trade of liquor in view of the Rath Yatra on Sunday.

Due to the police bandobast, many major bootlegging dens in the city have been closed. This means the bootleggers in the city will have to remain dependent on the smaller consignments of IMFL from areas like Daman and Maharashtra.

Talking to DNA, a bootlegger, on condition of anonymity, said that the prices of most of the brands have almost doubled due to the affected supply of the booze in the city.

Sources said that the supply of liquor has been low for the last 20 to 25 days as no major consignment is reaching the city. “Most of the big time bootleggers have left the city to escape police actions during these days,” the source said. Every year, most of the bootleggers go underground before the annual Rath Yatra.

“The highest price increase in brands in regular demand has been in Signature. It’s price has rocketed from Rs600 to Rs1,100,” the bootlegger said.

Police sources said that though the big fishes go underground, their counterparts or their second in-command take over the trade during this period. A tin of beer, which normally sells at Rs100 to 120 in the city, is costing Rs200 these days.

The bootlegger added that the routes for smuggling IMFL in the city is changed a month before the Rath Yatra. “The consignments come in small  quantity from Maharasthra and Daman,” he said.
