Rapid urbanisation and a huge increase in the number of motor vehicles are threatening the long term sustainability of urban areas, and fuelling the demand for an efficient public transport system.
With a population of around 60 lakh people and a vehicle population of around 20 lakh, congestion on the city’s roads is building up.
With around 400 vehicles added to the city’s roads every day, people are getting worried about the growing traffic congestion on the roads.
The AMC has focused on devising a people-centric transport strategy for Ahmedabad. It has focussed on moving people and not traffic. We believe that all people —men and women, young and old, the able-bodied and the physically challenged — should be able to move around in the city comfortably. Efficiency, affordability, safety and security are central to the plan.
It is to emphasise this that chief minister Shri Narendra Modi has named the system, Janmarg.
Janmarg (or the BRTS) will have aesthetically-designed and accessible bus stops. Ticketing will be off-board. Smart cards will let you through the turnstiles as in a rail system. Bus doors and the doors of the bus stops will open and close simultaneously.
Passengers will get information about bus arrivals, departure, closure of doors, etc, at the bus stops as well as in the bus. There will be common tickets with the AMTS.
AMC has taken extra care to ensure adequate lighting. We will also install CCTV’s at bus stations, junctions and other similar locations. With all these, moving around in Ahmedabad will be easier and safer.
Janmarg is currently in the trial stage. Buses with passengers leave every five minutes between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm in the morning and between 5:00 pm and 10.00 pm in the evening. All Ahmedabad citizens are key stakeholders in Janmarg and are welcome to take a ride and give their feedback.
