President Pratibha Patil today said it was important to ensure that the benefits of economic progress reached every segment of the society since the true meaning of prosperity and progress was welfare of all.

Patil was speaking after dedicating to humanity a massive lotus-shaped structure symbolising "universal peace and fraternity" at Santhigiri, a  spiritual retreat founded by Karunakara Guru at Pothenkode near Thiruvanathapuram.

"He  taught his followers to work collectively for peace, family welfare and spiritual growth. He spoke of his own work as action intended to take humanity forward and reduce the sufferings of human kind," Patil said.

A critical aspect of his message was its emphasis on addressing the concerns of the less privileged and disadvantaged sections, so as to build a society which was more equitable and sustainable, the president said.

The 91-foot high structure in pristine marble is conceived as a 'parnasala' (hermitage) standing at the 'last resting place' of Karunakara Guru.

The president also inaugurated a month-long programmes to be held at the ashram to mark the 'parnasala' dedication, which included an international seminar on global warming.
