A shadow is the play of natural light on your body shaping up a contoured reflection of your body on the falling object or ground. In Hindi, the term for shadow is chhaya and going by this traditional play of natural lights, National Institute of Design (NID), is organising India’s first international conference on photography which will be a two-day affair.
“We are going back to the roots by calling the conference Chhaya, as natural light has always helped in casting a picture, a shadow. And the similar technique is also used in photography, hence the name. For this first ever conference on photography, we have nearly 30 speakers and going by this response we intend to make this an annual affair”, informed Deepak J Mathew, coordinator, photography department, NID.
To mark the commencement of the conference, scheduled on February 1 and 2, a photography exhibition on January 31 will be inaugurated by NID director, Pradyumna Vyas. The exhibition will feature works of Padma Shri awardee, late TS Satyan, titled, ‘Recorder of Life, Beauty and Truth’. The same day will feature a lecture on ‘Travelling Light’ by Maria Kapajeva, followed by ‘91’ a photography exhibition by graduate students of NID.
Mathew said that many topics related to photography will be touched upon at the two-day lecture-cum-conference series. “For instance, photography and research, photography and photography education, connecting the world, collaborative projects and exchanges, photography and practice and photography and dissemination will be some of the topics. These subjects will help the students get a wider perspective of the profession they are into. This conference is open only to serious photography students and current practitioners”, Mathew stated.
