Left to raise price rise, corruption in Parliament

The Left will also hit out at the BJP government in Karnataka over the illegal mining scandal.

Price rise and corruption would be the major planks for the Left parties to launch a scathing attack on the Manmohan Singh government during the Monsoon session of Parliament, with the CPI(M) having already served an adjournment motion notice on inflation.

The rise in prices of petro products and essential commodities, as well as food security would be major issues which the Left parties will take up during the session to corner the UPA-II.

Left sources said CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia has already served a notice for an adjournment motion on price rise to the Lok Sabha Speaker.

The party plans to take the government to task on the issue of corruption and raise matters relating to 2G spectrum allocation scandal and Commonwealth Games, among other things. They will also hit out at the BJP government in Karnataka over the illegal mining scandal.

The Left parties will demand a debate on the draft Lokpal bill as they want the Prime Minister to be included in its ambit.

Internal security and the growing attacks allegedly by Trinamool Congress-Maoist combine on Left activists in West Bengal and TC's "soft" attitude towards the extremists will also be raised forcefully, the sources said, adding that the MPs plan to hold a protest sit-in on the issue late August.

The other issues which the Left parties would oppose include entry of multinational companies into retail trade and the  continuance of targeted public distribution system as against universal PDS, which was in practice earlier.

Land acquisition policies aimed at "squeezing the peasantry" in agriculture and the fight against land grab by corporates and real estate speculators depriving the farmers of their lands would be raised.

The issue of "war crimes" against Sri Lankan Tamils, the "fallout" of Indo-US nuclear deal and strategic ties would als be raised by the Left parties, they said.

The Left leaders will also coordinate their attack on the government with other "like-minded" parties on all these issues.
