Left, BJP for ratification of important treaties by Parliament

Participating in the debate on a Private Member's Resolution moved by Brinda Karat (CPI-M), they said similar practices were prevalent in other countries.

The Left parties, which had sought ratification of the Indo-US nuclear deal by Parliament two years ago, today pressed for such a provision for international treaties of national importance.
   
Participating in the debate on a Private Member's Resolution moved by Brinda Karat (CPI-M), they said similar practices were prevalent in other countries.

Gyan Prakash Pilania (BJP) said international treaties of permanent nature should have sanction of all parties.
   
He said the practice of ratification of such treaties by the Senate exist even in USA and added that "these are the ways of ensuring that a treaty gets its sanctity".

Matilal Sarkar (CPI-M) said any treaty, in which sovereignty and interests of the country is involved, has to be ratified by Parliament. Treaties "other than of technical and executive nature" should be brought before Parliament for ratification, he said.
 
Referring to the recent treaty signed by India with ASEAN, Sarkar said the decision to open Indian markets for their cash crops will land indigenous products in trouble.

EMS Natchiappan (Cong) said political parties should not oppose any treaty related to foreign policy once the government takes a decision, though it should be discussed by all parties before a final view is taken.
   
Najma Heptulla (BJP) said Parliament should have the right to accept or reject treaties. Government must come to Parliament before signing treaties, she said.

NK Singh (JD-U) said whatever involves the interest of the common man should be placed before the Parliament, while P Kanan (Cong) wanted to know if it was possible for a government to sign a pact and then get it ratified.
