With no word from the Gujarat High Court regarding their demand to transfer district & sessions judge RP Dholaria, lawyers in Surat proceeded on an indefinite strike on Monday.

The decision to go on indefinite strike was taken during the general board meeting of Surat District Bar Association this afternoon. In absence of the association president Mahendrasinh Atodaria, the meeting was presided over by in-charge president Babu Rayka.

The SDBA had announced a two-day strike in July to press for the removal of judge Dholaria. However, they had deferred their stir by three weeks following a meeting with High Court officials. The association was assured that their demand was under active consideration of High Court and that they could expect to hear it in two - three weeks.
Lawyers said the three-week deadline expired on August 21, but they have not received any word yet with regards to their demand from the High Court, and hence they have no option but to strike work indefinitely.

“An indefinite strike is the only way to ensure that our demand is accepted. It is time to show lawyers’ strength and unity,” lawyers said during the general board meeting, before deciding to strike work indefinitely.
