Landslide buries five alive in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: In a freak accident, five labourers were killed and one hurt in a landslide at the Parimal underpass near Juta Bazaar on Friday at 6:30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses said the huge mound of earth beside which the victims were working collapsed on them.

The five victims have been identified as Kalu Gharasiya, Jaisinh, Mansinh, Hiralal Neenama and Kamlesh Badamir. All the five were from Rajasthan. The injured labourer, Hiralal Bamaniya, has been admitted to the VS hospital. Within minutes of the incident, police personnel had reached at the spot. Officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) also arrived there soon.

Among the officials were chief fire officer MF Dastoor, Rajesh Bhatt and the chairman of the standing committee of the AMC, Asit Vora. Vora told mediapersons that the accident would be investigated and that action would be taken against the guilty.

Meanwhile, an official enquiry has been ordered against Ravi Builders, the contractors building the underpass. Municipal commissioner IP Gautam asked the deputy municipal commissioner, Utpal Padia, to initiate the enquiry.The labourers were working on the railway track that is being laid on the underpass.

Ellisbridge police officials present at the spot said a complaint of accidental death would be registered over the incident.

"When we reached the accident site, we found that five labourers had died and one was injured," a policeman said.

The injured labourer told the police that they were working when the earth mound collapsed on them. "We were caught unawares," Bamaniya said.
