PATNA: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi, both former chief ministers of Bihar, have found a new way to beat stress - yoga lessons conducted by a disciple of popular guru Ramdev.

Sources in Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) said he was suffering from stress after the loss in the Bihar assembly elections in November.

Senior RJD leader Anwar Ahmad, a close associate of Lalu Prasad, confirmed that the former first family of Bihar was taking lessons on yoga from a disciple of Baba Ramdev, best known for his programmes on spiritual TV channels.

"Blood sugar problems were not new to Lalu Prasad but they were under check. His blood sugar levels shot up after he lost the polls. That was when he turned to Ramdev's yoga," said an RJD source.

Ahmad said: "Laluji has taken yoga lessons and is practising yoga regularly to keep himself healthy. He practises yoga for not less than half an hour every morning despite his busy schedule."

The effect of the yoga lessons is there for all to see, said Ahmad. "He appears fresh and hardly gets irritated," he said.

Following a request from Lalu Prasad, the popular tele-guru sent his disciple Parveen to teach various asanas or yoga postures and rhythmic breathing techniques to the couple.

"Parveen visited them here twice in the past month to teach various asanas. Ramdev also sent some special auyrvedic medicines for Laluji," Ahmad said.

Ramdev last month was embroiled in a controversy after Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat alleged his pharmacy was using human body parts and bones to manufacture ayurvedic medicines. Lalu Prasad, among other political leaders, had come forward to defend the guru.
