The recent suicide by a farmer in Kutch rocked the state assembly on Thursday after the state government rejected the opposition demand for special relief for the family of the deceased tiller of the soil.

Congress MLA from Jodia, Raghavji Patel, raised a

Short Notice question during Question Hour about the self immolation of Jabardaan Gadhvi in Rapar, Kutch, on February 21.

Patel sought to know about the action taken against Rapar mamlatdar, government officials and police personnel who had allegedly failed to prevent Gadhvi's suicide even though he had given prior information about his intent.

In reply, revenue minister Anandi Patel apprised the House of the steps taken against the mamlatdar, talati and police personnel. She said that cases had been registered in connection with the incident and accused officials had been suspended.

Unsatisfied with the reply, Congress MLA from Rapar, Babu Shah, asked as to why no arrests had been made in the case yet.

He demanded that inquiry into the incident should be conducted by a sitting high court judge and not a deputy collector.

Shah also enquired as to what relief the state government had planned to give to the deceased farmer's family.

In response, the revenue minister said that relief will be provided in accordance with government guidelines.

To this, leader of opposition, Shaktisinh Gohil blamed the government's negligence for Gadhvi's death and demanded that special relief should be announced for the farmer's family in the House itself.

However, the minister rejected the demand and stuck to her earlier statement that relief would be provided, but only according to guidelines.

This upset the Congress MLAs and they started shouting slogans blaming the government for the farmer's death and walked out of the House.

The shocking self immolation had taken place in Rapar last month when Jabardaan Gadhvi set himself ablaze outside the mamlatdar's office and ended his life. He had taken the extreme step after he allegedly failed to get information under RTI about 12 acres of his land, which had allegedly been sold off by someone without his knowledge.

The mamlatdar and some police personnel were allegedly present at the scene when Jabardaan had set himself alight, but they did not make any attempt to stop him or douse the fire.
