The UPA government is making every effort to ensure the passage of Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha too, Union tourism minister Kumari Selja said today.
"We are very much optimistic that women of this country would soon get 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies," the Ambala MP told reporters here.
She said efforts would be made to reach a consensus between various political parties regarding the bill.
The minister observed that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi deserves credit for "daring to bring this bill after taking a
great risk".
She recalled that former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had initiated the empowerment of women by implementing quota for
them in Panchayats.
To a query, Selja said the union government would soon bring the Real Estate Model Act to save the interests of real estate sector and the consumers.
She said the government had received several complaints from the consumers that some builders had cheated them by offering disputed piece of land. She said the Model Act would be sent to state governments so that they could implement it accordingly.
To another question, she said her ministry was taking measures to attract foreign tourists during upcoming Commonwealth Games.
