Andhra Pradesh government tonight gave a mixed response to the verdict of Justice Brijesh Kumar Tribunal on Krishna River Waters sharing dispute even as the opposition slammed the government accusing it of failing to protect the state’s interests on the issue.

"The Tribunal’s verdict is partly beneficial and partly detrimental to Andhra Pradesh’s interest. We will study the verdict and take a decision on the course of action," chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said.

Information technology minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, who had presented the state’s arguments before the Tribunal for the last six years as major irrigation minister, said they would have to examine the verdict from all angles.

"Any government action will be decided only after studying the Tribunal’s verdict," he said.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao demanded that all the 190 TMC ft of additional water allocated to the state be utilised in the Telangana region alone.

"We have the first right over the assured water from river Krishna.

All the 190 tmc ft additional allocation made to the state should be utilized in Telangana region, of which 100 TMC ft should be given to Mahbubnagar district alone,” he said.

Telugu Desam Party politburo member K Yerran Naidu in Vijayawada that the Tribunal’s verdict on Krishna river water sharing was a "death blow" to the state.

"This will turn AP, known as the rice bowl, into a desert," Yerran Naidu feared and said the ruling Congress owed an explanation to the people on its failure to protect the state’s rights.

CPI state secretary K Narayana said Karnataka benefited immensely from the Tribunal’s award.

"This will have a telling impact on agriculture in Andhra Pradesh," he said and demanded the state government take an all-party delegation to Delhi and prevail upon the Centre for taking a "political decision" in allocating rightful share of Krishna waters to Andhra Pradesh.
