The agitators fasting for the closure of the 1000 MW Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant were given a dressing down by Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa who described the reactor quite safe.

“My discussions with nuclear scientists and engineers have allayed all kinds of apprehensions. The reactors coming up at Koodankulam feature state-of-the-art safety measures. There is no justification for the agitation against the reactors,” Jayalalithaa said in a statement on Friday.

Representations of various organisations including Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy, NGOs and some sections of the Church have been on indefinite fast asking for the closure of the Koodankulam plant which is expected to be commissioned by December 2011.

The chief minister said she was convinced about the safety measures incorporated into the reactor. “There is fear among the people because of the meltdown of the nuclear reactors at Fukushima in Japan. But our engineers have built the Koodankulam reactors taking into account all safety aspects and hence there is no need for the general public to panic,” said Jayalalithaa.

Once the two units of the Koodankulam become fully operational, the state would get 925 MW power, she said. Tamil Nadu is facing severe power shortage, with a peak hour shortfall of 3000 MW.
