Knowledge is key to progress in 21st century: President

Knowledge is the key to progress of any nation in the 21st century and educational institutions need to play an important role in the process of making India a powerful nation, President Pratibha Patil said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya here, she said the youngsters, with their knowledge and skills, should commit themselves towards a strong and self-reliant country.

The President noted that education forms an important part of an individual's character building. "Schools are important institutions where children hone their knowledge skills since early age. Schools should also contribute to the overall development of children."

She stressed the need to highlight and propagate the importance of women's education. "As the country's first woman President, I am always proud of women who achieve success by overcoming all hurdles."

Orissa Governor Murlidhar Bhandare, an ex-student of the school, said his alma mater focused on value-based education and skill enhancement among students.

The new generation must pledge to eradicate illiteracy and poverty, he stated.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said he was proud of the school's rich culture and heritage. "Its students participated in the 1942 Quit India movement and also contributed to Maharashtra's growth in the last 50 years."

The Chief Minister said India has a vast human resource based on which a knowledge economy can be developed. "We need to do away with old curriculum and impart quality education besides improving the quality of teachers."
