Clad in a white shirt and trousers, and surrounded by supporters clad in saffron, Shah visited Guptanagar, Pravinnagar, Savasinagar and Sarohinagar in Vasna ward - areas mainly housing chawls - on the last day of his door-to-door campaign. Two other candidates, Ashish Patel and Vilas Sohelia, accompanied Shah on his campaign.

"We have been complaining about defunct streetlights for ten months now, but despite numerous representations, nobody came forward to solve our problem. Now that the elections are round the corner, they want to woo us with promises, so that we vote for them!" rued Ilaben, a resident of Sorainagar, to long-serving Vasna corporator and former mayor Amit Shah, when DNA accompanied him on his campaign trail on Sunday morning.

Shah was quick to clarify to DNA that it was from his funds that 200 streetlights were installed in chawls like Saroinagar. "The complaint regarding defunct streetlights has not reached me as yet. But now, I will ensure that they get functional in a few days," he said.

While the common perception about corporators is that they do not visit their wards regularly, Shah has managed to win the hearts of most people in his locality.

Even children in the chawl are familiar with his name. He boasts of having had work to the tune of Rs82.55 crore carried out in Vasna, which has taken care of urban infrastructure in posh areas and basic amenities in the not-so-posh ones.

Vasna was among the first wards in the city to be covered by the ambitious BRTS project. It also boasts swimming pools, libraries and a storm water drainage line, among others, thanks to Shah, who was city mayor and has served three terms as corporator.

"It is from my funds that I provided personal toilets in 5,500 houses in chawls in my area. Now, they have stone-paved roads, a drainage line and water connections in their homes," boasted Shah. Unlike some corporators who ensured their comfort while asking for votes, Shah preferred to take an auto-rickshaw to remind voters in the area to vote for his panel at the upcoming elections.

Jejus Jhagadia, who runs a motel business in Chicago, was also one among Shah's supporters, just a day after he came to Ahmedabad on Saturday night. "The kind of work he has done for Sorainagar is commendable. No one else could have done so. Many officials and commissioners paid a visit to the area to provide a drainage line, but it was only Shah who lowered the main drainage line to give us connections," said Jhagadia.
