A teacher is supposed to be a role model for the students as far as morals are concerned. However, this teacher gave all the morals a kick and became a victim of the spurious liquor.

Gaya Prasad Yadav, a teacher at Saraspur Hindi School No 4, lost his life after consuming spurious liquor in Odhav area on Wednesday. He had been serving in the school for 13 years.

Yadav was not the only municipal teacher who was addicted to liquor. Around 10% of the nearly 4,000 municipal teachers are addicted to liquor, said sources in municipal school board.
Sources also said that in the last meeting of teachers of Hindi and Sindhi medium schools, the issue of liquor dens near schools was raised. However, the school board officials did not pay any attention to it, said sources.

Around nine months back, Shiv Kumar Sharma, a teacher in Amraiwadi Hindi School No 9, was suspended for consuming liquor. It was also believed that he used to come to school in a drunken state and harass girl students. A police complaint was filed against him.

There is another problem. There are many stands of country-made liquor such as Lilawati no addo, Shashi no addo, Kamalaben no addo near Amraiwadi Hindi School No 9 and Amraiwadi Gujarati School No 16, said sources. They also claimed that at Rajpur Hindi School No 2, a teacher used to come to school by consuming charas.

In Kantodia Vaas, two Hindi medium schools have become almost dens of country-made liquor. Residents of the area have stopped sending their children to these schools as it has become a haven for people consuming liquor there. Residents say they brought this to the notice of officials but nothing happened.

Same is the case at Kubernagar Main Sindhi School at Nehrunagar. A country-made liquor stand has been running right adjacent to the compound wall of the school for nearly 20 years.

"People start coming to consume liquor right from early morning and it becomes almost impossible to pass by the area during late evening hours. If someone dares to lodge complaint with police, he is threatened by the bootleggers. So nobody dares to raise any kind of opposition to this illegal activity in the city," said a resident.
