Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: Gunotsav -- three-day exercise of state government machinery to assess the quality of government-aided schools, began on Monday. And as expected, the reactions of officers who went for the assessment was in the favour of the event. However, many school teachers were not happy with the programme and believe that such programmes affect the classroom teaching rather than help in the improving the quality of education.
Ahmedabad municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, "The school, which we visited at Shahpur, was quite nice and impressive. It was good experience, students, teachers were enthusiastic about 'Gunotsav'. We also took a surprise visit to another school and contrary to our expectations, the school was functioning better than the first school that we visited."
Lagdhir Desai, administrative officer of Ahmedabad municipal school board, said that on the first day of Gunotsav, 266 classes of 40 schools were covered.
"We undertook the supervision of the schools according to the format prescribed by the state government," Desai said, adding, "The praveshotsav organised by the state government resulted in enrollment of a higher number of students and decrease in the dropout ratio. Likewise, the Gunotsav will bring out the best in the students as well as the teachers which ultimately lead to better quality education system," said Desai.
Prashant Pandya, deputy director of solid waste management department of AMC, said that the performance of the students at Jamalpur Gujarat School No 4 was found satisfactory. "We asked the students to read a paragraph and also asked them to solve some sums," said Pandya. He also said that such a programme will help the students and teachers know their positive sides and take corrective measures on loopholes," he said.
However, teachers of AMC schools showed their disinterest in Gunotsav. A teacher on the condition of anonymity said, "We have been reduced to clerks from teachers, as we have to provide various information to the higher authorities and keep the records updated. We don't get enough time for real teaching work in the classrooms because of such kind of utsavs. When there were no such functions in the past in AMC-run schools, the level of teaching in these schools was much higher. We are constantly under stress."
