After getting the green signal from the scrutiny committee to contest in the senate election on Thursday, Ketan Desai, former chairman of MCI, is a step closer to becoming a senate member in the registered graduate category.

University officials on Friday announced the status of most of the seats, and surprisingly, the tainted doctor grabbed the senate berth in the faculty of medicine.

Desai's opponent and a close ally, Prof HP Bhalodia withdrew his candidature, leaving him the sole contestant in the category. Not happy with this development, advocate Vijay Sharma, former senate member, approached the vice-chancellor and gave him a formal complaint and a memorandum to cancel Desai's candidature. Sharma cited a notification by the MCI, which clearly states that Desai is barred from representing doctors at any level. V-C Parimal Trivedi, however, reiterated that till Desai's degree in medicine is not revoked, he cannot be stopped.

In another major development, for the first time in the history of senate election at GU, almost 50 of the 86 seats were declared uncontested after several candidates withdrew their candidature on Friday.  Most of the contestants are believed to be members of the Teachers Association headed by KS Shastri.

Sources said some see this gesture as a sign of goodwill by the association and Shastri while others think there is more to it than what meets the eye.

All the seats in the principal category of all major faculties were declared uncontested on Friday. These include 10 seats of arts, three seats of education and law each, eight seats of science and one each from medicine and dental faculty. However, election will be held in the teachers category of arts, law, science and education faculties. Same can be said for the registered graduate category for arts, commerce, law, and education.

Sources said that the registered graduate category may not see election owing to last-minute withdrawals.
