The students of Kesar Sal Medical College can now breathe easy as the state government has assured to form a committee to ensure that they are able to continue their education without any hindrance.

After the Medical Council of India (MCI) withdrew recognition of the college, their fate had become uncertain. The students had then moved the Gujarat high court with the plea that they be accommodated in other medical colleges of the state.

During hearing of the case on Wednesday, advocate-general Kamal Trivedi told the court, “Students can continue their studies in Kesar Sal Medical College, for which proper arrangement will be made in the college. A committee will be constituted for proper management of the college, so that students are not put to any inconvenience or difficulty.”

After a series of hearings, the state government came up with the proposal to constitute a committee headed by Ashok Bhatia, former additional chief secretary, so that the college can function effectively and provide proper facilities and assistance to the students pursuing their studies there.

Other members of the committee will be Dr Bharat Shah, dean, Government Medical College, Ahmedabad; joint secretary, health & family welfare department, government of Gujarat; a representative of Gujarat University to be nominated by the vice-chancellor; dean of Kesar Sal Medical College and a representative of the trust which was running the college.

Meanwhile, the counsel of Kesar Sal Medical College stated that sufficient funds would be provided, so that the college could function effectively.

After assurances by the state government and the college authorities, the HC bench observed, “Needless to say that it is the responsibility of the state government to see that proper facilities are afforded to the students for their continuous studies in Kesar Sal Medical College, since they are undertaking the responsibility.

We make it clear that it is open to the Medical Council of India to conduct periodical visits to the college to ascertain whether proper facilities are given to the students. This arrangement is made only for the studies of 229 students.”
