A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Mullaperiyar Dam, her party MPs today met him alleging that the ministers and officials of Kerala were "spreading panic and rumours" among people through media on the issue.

"These actions of the Government of Kerala go against the spirit of the Constitution of India and they are not in the interests of both states," the MPs said in a memorandum seeking prime minister's intervention on the issue.

They also alleged that the recent actions of the Kerala Government in raising the bogey of dam safety appear to be an attempt to influence the Empowered Committee in submitting its report to the Supreme Court on the basis of fear psychosis.

"The Government of Kerala knows fully well that the dam is safe and sound. The ministers and officials of Kerala are repeatedly giving interviews to the media contrary to the order of the Supreme Court which had factored this into its order of 2006 and allowed the Government of Tamil Nadu to raise the level to 142 ft initially," the AIADMK MPs said in the memorandum.

"In spite of this, the Government of Kerala, having realised that it does not have any scientific data to prove that the dam is unsafe, is resorting to spreading panic and rumours among the people through the media which is highly condemnable," it said.

After meeting the Prime Minister, AIADMK leader in Lok Sabha M Thambidurai said Mullaperiyar dam was meant for 999 years of irrigation purposes and safety measures had been taken when the dam was constructed.

"Therefore, now creating this kind of unnecessary propaganda and creating panic among Kerala's people is not advisable," he told PTI.
