New Delhi: The Kerala unit of the JD-S today appeared headed for a split with its president MP Veerendra Kumar opposing the party's continuance of the alliance with ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala.

At a day long meeting of the national executive here, the party removed Verghese George, said to be close to Kumar, from the the post of general secretary and threatened to take action against anybody who defies the party's decision.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, JD-S president and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda said, "the national executive is the supreme body of the party and after its meeting if anybody tries to by-pass its decision, then action will be taken against him as per the party constitution."

Earlier, Kumar, who attended the meeting opposed the party's decision to continue the alliance with LDF, told reporters that he would hold a meeting of the party's state unit on July 12 to discuss the issue.

Even during the Lok Sabha elections, Kumar had opposed the party's tie-up with LDF. The CPI-M had refused to leave the Kozhikode seat, which Kumar had in the previous Lok Sabha, for JD-S and had offered a neighbouring seat.

Kumar had differences with Gowda when his son tied up with BJP and became chief minister to run a coalition government in Karnataka.
