Valley youths snubbed separatists on Wednesday when thousands turned up for a police recruitment rally in the heart of old Srinagar.

Braving bone-chilling cold, the youths lined up at a CRPF camp in a local hotel in Khanyar where vacancies for few hundred police constables were being filled up.

Taking a break from the past, there were no sloganeering, no pent-up emotions and no cry for azadi. The only thing palpable was the passion for becoming a proud cop.

“There are many stone-throwers in the queue who want to become policemen. Unemployment is the biggest factor which drives people to stone pelting. When people have a job and an honourable income at hand, they will not resort to such activities,” said Adil Ahmad (name changed), a job seeker.

“It is the police’s policy to recruit people from areas where we feel the representation in the forces is not on a desired level,” said Shiv Murari Sahai, inspector general of police, Kashmir range.

Khanyar has been at the forefront of the summer protest with separatist sentiment running high among the local population. But Wednesday’s employment rally was the priority for the people. “My father has passed away and I have two unmarried sisters. I want this job and I do not care about the agitation,” said Zahoor Ahmad (name changed), another aspirant.

The police had to close the exit and entry points of the venue to control the crowd and avoid a stampede. People from other areas too had turned up for the rally but they were asked to return as the camp was strictly meant for people from the Khanyar constituency.

J&K law and parliamentary affairs minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, who represents Khanyar assembly constituency, said the government has announced employment for one lakh educated youth.
