Karnataka governmnt confirms Yeddyurappa's resignation

 Karnataka legislator Balachandra Laxmanrao Jharkiholi on Saturday confirmed the resignation of chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who has been indicted in Lokayukta Justice (retired) N. Santosh Hegde's report on illegal mining.

Emphasizing that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government's position was strong in the state and it would be proved in the near future, Jharkiholi said, "Yeddyurappa has never said that I am not going to resign. He only seeks the time for two three days. That has been settled and our senior leaders, they are taking the opinion of the MLC's, MP's and our senior party leaders, state office bearers and also MLA."

"Accordingly, they will select the new leader, CLP leader and in coming two years BJP will give a good government in Karnataka and will stable the BJP also in Karnataka," he added.

Jharkiholi further favoured Yeddyurappa, when the latter sought three day's time to tender his resignation.

"Such a senior leader of the party, who worked for the party, continuously worked for the party for forty years, he has seek for the three days that has been resolved. Today morning also our Chief minister met the senior leaders and he never said that he is not going to resign," he said.

Yeddyurappa met senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley earlier this morning and assured them that he will step down from his post tomorrow.

Yeddyurappa issued a statement on late Thursday night, saying he will tender his resignation on July 31.

According to reports, the leaders, who have emerged as top contenders for the chief minister's post are Karnataka BJP president KS Eshwarappa, Lok Sabha MP Sadanand Gowda, Higher Education Minister V S Acharya, Law and Justice Minister Suresh Kumar S, party national general secretary and MP Ananth Kumar, Rural Development minister Jagadish Shettar, a Lingayat leader and Yeddyurappa's close associate and minister Shoba Karandlaje.

Apart from Yeddyurappa, mining barons' Reddy brothers and several other influential leaders are reportedly involved in illegal mining in Karnataka as per Justice Hegde's report.

Justice Hegde on Wednesday confirmed that Lok Ayukta registrar Moosa Kunhi NayarMoole had submitted the illegal mining report to the state Chief Secretary SV Ranganath.

Justice Hegde also confirmed that the report indicts Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, members of his family and a trust run by them, and added that in the four-year period between 2006 and 2010, the loss to the Karnataka exchequer from illegal mining was to the tune of Rs.16, 085 crores.
