Kalupur building collapse case: Structural engineer arrested

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) made one more arrest in the building collapse case of Saudagar ni Pol in Kalupur. The arrested man has been identified as Anwar Shaikh.

He is the sixth person to be arrested in connection with the case.  But the DCB is yet to nab any official from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in this connection. Sources in DCB said that the Shaikh was the structural engineer of the building which collapsed in Kalupur.

They said that he is one of the key people responsible for the incident. “Shaikh was absconding since the last many days, and we were trying to find him. He was nabbed on Saturday afternoon,” the official said. Apart from investigating the mafia-builder nexus, the DCB said that it has also recorded the statements of AMC officials. DCB further said that the officials may again be called if required.

Earlier the police had arrested five people including alleged underworld don Mehboob Baigh alias Senior and his close aides.  Senior is believed to have funded the illegally constructed building in the area. He allegedly assigned responsibility of constructing the building to one Salim Bata, who was also arrested by DCB.

Apart from Senior and Salim Bata, the police had also arrested Hanif Bata, Munaf Bata and Salim Mansuri in the case. All of them are in the judicial custody.
