The Junagadh police will assess the culpability of the school authorities in the accident involving a school bus that occurred on Wednesday Jhanjharda Road in Junagadh. Two children were killed and 15 injured in the accident. The bus belonged to St Xavier’s School, Junagadh.

The police have registered a case of accident and will formally arrest the driver of the bus once he is discharged from hospital. The driver, too, was injured when his bus rammed into a tree.

Dipankar Trivedi, district superintendent of police, Junagadh, told DNA over the phone that the police will be looking into all aspects of the accident.

“It is an unfortunate incident. We have registered a case of accident and will arrest the driver, Mansukh Unadkat, as soon as he recovers,” he said. When asked about the cause of the accident, Trivedi said Unadkat was not able to see a pit on the road and lost control of the bus when it hit the pit.

“We will also check all the relevant documents of the vehicle to see whether the school had all the necessary papers and had completed all the legal formalities. If the school authorities are found negligent, we will take action against them,” Trivedi said.

Officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have checked the condition of the bus.

“The bus is in a good condition and the accident could have happened only because of an error on the part of the driver,” said YD Bhatt, assistant regional transport officer, Junagadh. Bhatt also said that RTO officials had thoroughly checked the licence and condition of the bus. A mechanical fault had been ruled out as the cause of the accident, Bhatt said.

Two children were killed and 15 injured when the school bus of St Xavier’s School rammed into a tree on the Jhanjharda Road in Junagadh on Wednesday. Abhay Somaiya and Jaywardansinh Jadeja, both Class 3 students, were killed in the mishap.

Of the 15 students injured in the accident, five were seriously hurt. The bus was carrying 48 children from Junagadh to Dhandhusar when the accident occured.
