After widespread protests and violent demonstrations across West Asia and many other countries against an anti-Islamic film, Muslims living in Juhapura also joined the stir by observing complete bandh on Friday.

Locals of Juhapura expressed their outrage and anger over the anti-Islam film,  ‘Innocence of Muslims’, which depicts Prophet Mohammad in a wrong manner. According to locals, the film has demeaned their prophet, which is not acceptable.

However, there were many locals who were not aware about what the film was about. “We haven’t seen the film. We just learnt that it is against Islam, so we have kept our shops closed,” said Mohammad Junaid, a shopkeeper.

“We condemn the film that has humiliated Islam. However, no one was forced to shut their shops and it was completely voluntary,” a leading builder in the Juhapura area, Zahid Sheikh told DNA. He also said that the bandh was peaceful.

Almost all shopkeepers, vendors and traders kept their shops and offices closed from Friday morning. Even roadside tea stall owners did not do business. “No one has come to us and asked us to keep our shops closed. We have joined the bandh voluntarily. We condemn the film and its makers for disrespecting our prophet,” said Akramkhan Pathan, a tea stall owner near Sonal cinema.

According to Pathan, he learnt about the bandh on Thursday through one of his friends, who received an SMS on his mobile. In the SMS, the Muslim community of Juhapura was asked to make the bandh successful and convey a strong message.

Some of the locals learnt about the bandh during their prayers in mosques. “Apart from Juhapura, Muslims of Sarkhej, Makarba and Vejalpur voluntarily joined in the bandh and made it successful. “We condemn the anti-Islamic film against our prophet as well as recent cartoons depicting the prophet in a bad light. Not just Islam, this bandh was against any activity against any religion in this world,” said Haji Mirza Baig, corporator of Sarkhej ward.
