A job placement cell to help widows of airmen has been launced by the wives association of Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Air Force Wives Welfare Association (AFWWA) launched the portal www.afwwaservices.co.in last week that will act as an interface between a prospective employer and a willing job-seeker among the wives and widows of air men.

"Initially, the idea (of starting the cell) came to me as I was thinking about the widows of the IAF personnel. Because, most of their letters often say that they need some job as they cannot sustain with the meagre pension they get," Air chief marshal P V Naik's wife Madhubaala Naik told PTI here today.

"We gave a thought to their plea and we came out with this job placement service," Madhubaala, who is also the AFWWA
president, said.

About the kind of employment the women from IAF families sought, she said the job could be from any field as the women
were qualified in different areas.

"It could be banking, corporate or any other sector. Some banks and companies have already come forward to help," she said.

AFWWA has requested prospective employers to provide jobs
to women in their hometowns so that they can take care of
their respective families while working.

"ICICI Bank for example has promised us, on our request, that the women would get jobs in their hometown," she added.

Asked about a similar website already functioning for retired air warriors, Madhubaala said the AFWWA website would cater only to women from IAF families.

On AFWWA's other projects, she said her organisation was
running schools for special children, apart from conducting
vocational courses for them to make them self-reliant.

The courses included weaving, candle making, paper bags and other simple vocations.

"ICICI Bank has been kind enough to donate some funds for
purchase of more looms for the Subroto Park training centre
recently," she added.

The new job website was launched by Air Chief Marshal Naik and dedicated by CEO and Managing Director of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar.

The portal would also provide a knowledge zone with tips on attending interviews, resume writing and a host of other e-learning courses offered by ICICI Bank.

AFWWA currently has over 1.8 lakh women as members compared to seven at its inception in 1970.
