Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Chief Bhim Singh has criticised the government's decision to ban pre-paid mobile connections in the state even as his party workers today staged a protest over the issue in Jammu.

JKNPP Chief Bhim Singh has lodged a strong protest on the issue with the Centre and urged Union home minister P Chidambaram to reconsider the ban.

"Your action banning the prepaid mobile phone services sounds arbitrary, discriminatory and authoritarian," he said in a letter.

He said if the reason for banning prepaid connections is that proper verification was not been done by the service providers or vendors, then it is no basis to ban the services.

Meanwhile, 40 JKNPP activists led by party general secretary Anita Thakur today staged a demonstration outside Press Club of Jammu here and raised slogans.

They also burnt the effigies of Union home minister P Chidambaram and state chief minister Omar Abdullah.

Stating that there was no justification for banning the pre-paid mobiles on security considerations, she said that militants and terrorists were already in possession of sophisticated communication equipments, including satellite phones.
